How Much Does a Chimney Sweep Cost in Raleigh, NC?

It is the first thing homeowners ask when the weather turns. Here is what we actually charge, what moves the number, and how to tell a real quote from a bait-and-switch.

The short answer

A standard chimney sweep starts at $200, and most Raleigh jobs land between $200 and $400. A standalone inspection with no sweep is $69 right now.

All prices shown are starting rates. Final pricing depends on flue height, creosote level and access, and is confirmed in writing before any work begins — we never charge more than quoted.

One thing worth being clear about: the inspection is already included in the sweep. The $69 inspection is for people who do not need a sweep yet — buying a house, inheriting a fireplace they have never used, or wanting a straight answer on whether the chimney is safe before burning season starts.

What changes the price

Creosote level is the biggest factor. A chimney swept last year has a thin, dusty layer that brushes out quickly. One that has burned three or four seasons unswept can have glazed creosote — hard, tarry, and far more work to remove. That is the difference between the low and high end of the range.

After that: flue height and roof pitch (a steep two-story roof takes longer and more care than a single-story ranch), the number of flues (a second fireplace or a wood stove sharing the chimney is a second job), and what we find inside. Animal nests are common here in spring and summer — birds and squirrels get in through a missing or damaged cap, and clearing a packed nest takes time a routine sweep does not.

Access matters too. An open hearth is straightforward. A sealed insert or a wood stove has to come partly apart to reach the flue, which adds labour.

What a real quote should include

Before you agree to anything, the quote should state:

• Whether a Level I inspection is included or billed separately
• How many flues are being swept
• Whether the firebox, smoke shelf and damper are cleaned, not just the flue
• Whether before-and-after photos are provided
• Any minimum charge or trip fee
• Proof of NC licensing and liability insurance

Be especially careful with repair recommendations made on the spot. A cracked flue liner or failing crown is a real and serious finding — but you should see photographs of it before you agree to anything, and a second opinion on a four-figure repair is always reasonable.

How often you actually need it

The NFPA Standard 211 recommends annual inspection for every fireplace and wood-burning stove, with sweeping as needed based on what the inspection finds. In practice, if you burn regularly through a Raleigh winter, that means sweeping every year. If you light three or four fires a season, an annual inspection with sweeping every second or third year is usually the honest answer — and we will tell you when a sweep is not yet needed.

Gas fireplaces still need annual inspection even though they produce no creosote. Blockages, animal nests and venting faults are carbon monoxide risks regardless of fuel.
